Shiny Armarouge

It was a cold, rainy, wind swept winter day in 2021 Japan. Hitoshi Ariga was driving to work in his custom suspension Honda Fit, nimbly and deftly weaving in and out of lanes, passing slow mini vans full of incongruous phlegm filled yokels, and their brood.

“Mattaku no detarameda!”, Hitoshi cursed through tightly gritted teeth. He would be 22 seconds late clocking in, the fifth time this quarter of such unruly tardiness, and he knew he would hear all about it. Not just from his bosses; but also from his wife, his father, her father, and his eight month old son who just took his first steps shortly before Christmas.

His entire legacy hinged on his fresh, new shiny Pokemon designs. If he failed, so to would his ancestors, his children, and their children’s children, would all be shamed for more than an entire epoch.

White knuckling his soaked briefcase, Mr. Ariga shuddered his way through the dais past security where he was happily greeted by his assistant. Through razor sharp eyes he leered as if to say “Not today, Yunichi-sama, not tomorrow, and not even the next goddamned day, will I hear your non-sequitars about how life isn’t adding up, or how your ramen is always too soft and gummy”.

“Get a grip on your affairs Yunichi-sama, or you will soon be working at Bandai-Namco faster than you can slurp your bland ramen, so bland that not even the gaijin would try sup it, even through their ever opening maws, proclivities for over indulgence, and moon shaped eyes”.

He dared not waste his finite time considering these matters further and bristled past his bumbling “assistant”, up the elevators, and into his (seemingly) ever-shrinking office.

It was 9:01 in the dreary, grey morning, and Hitoshi was already contemplating how he should have just taken the job as an actuary or notary public, vocations his parents incessantly encouraged him towards.

Instead, buckling down in front of his freshly refurbished Lettera 32 he knew, destiny awaiting, that his dreams lie at his fingertips.

And so it was, with few keystrokes, he typed with fervour these seven words: “FUCK IT. I’LL GIVE HIM BLUE EYES”.
